Slaughterhouse Starlets by Keith P. Rein

Slaughterhouse Starlets is an illustrated series by designer Keith P. Rein that features a set of images of a violent, badass version of some female celebrities, such as Emma Stone, Zooey Deschanel, Emma Watson and Beyoncé. It's a Hollywoodesque bloodshed! Personally speaking, I absolutely love this kick-ass slasher aesthetic and I wish there was a movie inspired by all this lady-like horror starred by the same actresses.
This set of illustrations has been a source of amazement for a couple of months but only now I am mentioning it in this blog. I really like Emma Stone's blood-covered baseball bat and Zooey's axe! As these art mixed-media prints turned out pretty awesome, Keith P. Rein planned on doing more. He told New York Magazine "A lot of times, I'll just make up a story. With her (Christina Hendricks), she killed her husband with the syringe and buried him with the shovel. (...) The overall idea was just taking these pop stars and actresses that are typically not associated with slasher films and putting them in the macabre setting.". Hollywood's finest at the most GORE-geous context you can possibly picture - how cool is that?
You can purchase these illustrations here.

  1. These illustrations are SO cool! Thanks for sharing, I probably wouldn't have seen them otherwise

  2. I just find these images disturingly sexist to be honest. Apparently, when a woman kills; she licks her own knees in a vulnerable position, wears sexy underwear, the blouses are obviously buttoned up; how can people NOT react on how wrong this is?

    1. I don't see it that way. Patricia Clarke, Tina Fey and Natalie Portman don't look sexually suggestive at all in these illustrations, in my humble opinion. I sort of get your point, really, but I really like the concept of this, it reminds me a bit of the iconic killer girls in Kill Bill, for ex. Not sure of what's on Keith Rein's mind though. Thanks for commenting, Cosette.

    2. Thank you for the answer! I wouldn't justify the illustrations because a few of them don't face the problem I mentioned. However, I do see a problem with the illustrations of the other women as well, since they are portrayed in stereotypically vulnerable poses - but that is another topic I'd gladly discuss another time! Just take one moment to think about Harrisson Ford in the same pose as, let's say, Natalie Portman and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
One of the problems with this is how women generally is portrayed in the media, and how it influence people's thoughts about women in general. I don't suggest that Rein has a hidden agenda behind all this, I think he is just as brain washed by the society as anyone.
A good documentary about the topic n__n :

    2. I suppose this is about my comment. I think it's very disturbing when people don't see the difference between sex/being sexy and sexism. I don't see a problem when it comes to Mane's paintings of a naked prostitute, but I see problems with these illustrations.

Just take a moment to think about if the women on the pictures really have "control" and "power", or if they're portrayed as they are in their poses and lack of clothes for people to think that they're sexy? Look at their face expressions and their poses. They don't really look haunting to me. I would actually PREFER the women to be completely naked rather than showing flattering underwear, breast slips and being completely naked with an apron (?!). Womens power go beyond that, and is worth much more than that.

    4. Maybe the sexism is in the eye of the beholder...? I mean, I look at these sketched women and unless they were advertising or trying to sell something, I can't share the same point of view. I see them as characters, not real women. And I like to imagine the context beyond what these illustrations have to offer. I actually like the analogy between sex and violence and the implicit link displayed in here, as seen in films like "The Doom Generation", etc. I associate all this to B horror movies actually. And I can imagine men playing the same role, specially Adam Ant, he'd look terrific covered in blood and wearing bloomers only.

    5. I'd say that all people who have made studies about the issue would agree, it's not just an opinion, it's a social problem about how women are portrayed in popular culture.
See the documentary I posted from 26:47.
As I've said, there is a difference between sex and sexism, I can unfortunately not relate to the popular culture you are referring to since I don't take much interest in violence. The only film genre I like is drama. :)
And as I said before, I think it would be less "sexism" and more "sex" if the women were completely naked, so I don't understand your argument.

Adam Ant are not portrayed as these women are,

It's not just about the clothes or lack of clothes, it's about poses and face expressions as well.
      This might be the best video to explain it with (sex, sexuality and sexism in violent games);

  6. Cooote! Oddly. Maybe an odd choice of words but I think they are cute. I especially love the Natalie Portman one and the Emma Stone one. Oh how nice would it be to be able to draw, envious. Yes, thanks for sharing, I've saved Nat and Emma.

  10. Cosette Munch .....FUCK OFF with your narrow minded "sexist" this that and the other.
'Ew why is the bread I buy so curvy, its so sexist the way they make it in that shape. What if it was a square block and masculine, would you look at in the same way?"

Stupid ass comments that no one cares about! Look at the art for what it is..if you actually researched his work, he has illustrated men.
    Discuss that you moomin!
